Tech (Calgary and Edmonton)
The AAIP Express Entry Stream includes a dedicated Accelerated Tech Pathway for software engineers, developers, data scientists, and IT professionals. Calgary's tech scene grew over 30% since 2020 — Shopify, Benevity, RBC, and Stripe all have major Calgary presence.
Oil, gas, and energy
Alberta remains Canada's energy capital. Petroleum engineers, geologists, and skilled trades (welders, electricians, instrumentation technicians, heavy-equipment operators) are recruited consistently — particularly in Fort McMurray, Calgary, and Edmonton.
Healthcare
Alberta's Dedicated Health Care Pathway under the AAIP Express Entry Stream is one of the most nurse-specific PNP streams in Canada. Registered nurses, allied health professionals, and physicians are recruited under provincial regulatory frameworks (Alberta College of Nursing, CPSA, etc.).
Construction and trades
Sustained construction activity across Calgary, Edmonton, and the resource regions drives consistent demand for carpenters, electricians, plumbers, welders, and heavy-equipment operators. The AAIP Opportunity Stream requires a current full-time Alberta job plus one of its work-experience routes — 12 months in Alberta, 24 months in Canada and/or abroad, or 6 months for eligible Alberta graduates — among its other criteria.

Do I need to live in Alberta before applying to the AAIP?+
Most AAIP streams require either current Alberta residence on a work permit (Opportunity Stream, Tourism & Hospitality, Rural Renewal) or an Alberta-aligned federal EE profile (Express Entry Stream). The Express Entry Stream is the path for candidates applying from outside Canada or another province.
Is Alberta tax-friendly for newcomers?+
Yes — Alberta has no provincial sales tax (no PST) and the lowest provincial income tax of any Canadian province. Combined federal-plus-provincial effective tax rates are lower than every other province for most income brackets — meaningful for high-earning professionals weighing Calgary vs Toronto.
How fast is the AAIP compared to federal Express Entry?+
For workers already in Alberta, the AAIP Express Entry Stream pairs a provincial nomination with the federal pool: the +600 CRS from nomination is the largest single boost in the system, though invitations still depend on your total CRS and the round's cut-off. After nomination, the federal Express Entry step currently takes about 6 months (IRCC's estimate; it changes monthly) — Alberta's own step comes first.
