How Long Does Canadian PR Take? A Realistic Timeline

Before you can apply to anything, you need:

• Language test — book and take it. 1–3 months including study time.
• ECA — send transcripts, get the report. 4–10 weeks.
• Police certificates — order from every country you lived in 6+ months as an adult. 2 weeks to 3 months depending on country.
• Passport — must be valid past your expected landing date.

These run in parallel. Most people finish this phase in 2 months if they push, or 4 months at normal pace.

After phase 1, you can create your application:

• Express Entry profile — 1-2 hours online. Free.
• PNP application — varies. Some are forms (2-4 hours). Some need supporting documents (1-2 weeks of prep).
• Family sponsorship — paperwork-heavy. 2-4 weeks of prep.

Submitting is fast. The wait that follows is the long part.

This phase varies a lot:

• Express Entry, CRS 500+: 0 to 3 months. The next general draw catches you.
• Express Entry, CRS 460-500: 3-12 months. Category-based draws may pick you sooner.
• Express Entry, CRS under 460: Usually longer than 12 months. Profile expires; you may need to renew it.
• PNP Express Entry stream: 2-6 months to get a notification of interest, then more weeks to formal nomination.
• PNP base stream: the wait for a nomination varies a lot by province — from a few weeks (Saskatchewan) to more than 6 months (Manitoba). Some provinces publish no times at all.
• Family sponsorship: varies — see the processing step below for the current figures.

Once you have an invitation (or a nomination for base PNPs), you send your full PR application:

• Express Entry post-invitation: about 7 months right now (IRCC's current estimate; it changes monthly).
• PNP base stream (after nomination): about 13 months right now for the federal step.
• Atlantic Immigration Program: about 26 months right now — much slower than it used to be.
• Family sponsorship (spouse): about 16 months from abroad, about 26 months from inside Canada, right now.

During processing, you may be asked for medicals, more documents, or an interview. Reply fast. Delays here add weeks.

Once approved, you get a COPR (Confirmation of Permanent Residence). You then have a window (usually 6-12 months) to physically arrive in Canada and complete the landing process at the border.

Landing itself is quick — a 30-minute interview at the airport or border. You walk out as a Permanent Resident.

Your total is the three parts added together — and no single number fits everyone:

• Preparation: mostly in your control. 2–4 months if you move fast; longer if documents are slow.
• The invitation wait: the least predictable part — from days (a high score) to a year or more (a lower score, or a provincial pool).
• The processing step: the government's current estimates are listed above — about 7 months for Express Entry right now, longer for most other routes.

That is why two people who start the same day can land a year apart.

Anyone telling you “3 months to PR” is either talking about one tiny phase, or selling you something. The real path is all three parts added together — and the government's processing step alone is currently about 7 months for the fastest route.
