Canadian immigration from the United States
US nationals are an underrated category of Canadian PR applicants — the demographic surged after 2017 and again post-2021 as tech-sector workers facing H-1B uncertainty looked north. Americans score extremely well on CRS (high education, native English) and benefit from cultural/professional alignment. Common patterns: tech workers from California and Seattle moving to Vancouver/Toronto, healthcare workers to Atlantic Canada, and academics across all provinces.

Programs that fit American applicants
The pathways with the strongest fit for American applicants, in order of typical use. Each links to a detailed page covering criteria, documents, and processing times.
Federal Skilled Worker Program
American professionals applying from the US. A bachelor's + CLB 10 (native English) + skilled work routinely produces a 500+ CRS — among the highest-scoring profiles in the pool.
Canadian Experience Class
Open after 1+ year of Canadian work — common path for Americans on intra-company transfer, IMP work permits, or those who initially studied in Canada.
Alberta Express Entry Stream
Alberta's Accelerated Tech Pathway is a popular choice for US tech workers facing H-1B uncertainty. Calgary's growing tech scene plus dramatically lower cost of living than Toronto or Vancouver.
BC PNP Skilled Worker
BC PNP Skilled Worker — Vancouver is the obvious choice for US tech workers from Seattle, San Francisco, and the West Coast generally. Same time zone, similar climate, and Vancouver's tech sector actively recruits H-1B holders facing renewal uncertainty.
What American applicants specifically need
Beyond the standard Canadian immigration documents, these are the country-specific steps that matter coming from the United States.
ECA via WES (fast)
US degrees assess quickly through WES — typically 3-5 weeks. The credential hierarchy maps cleanly (bachelor's = bachelor's, master's = master's, JD treated as professional degree).
Language tests
Required despite native English. IELTS, CELPIP, or PTE Core. Most American applicants score CLB 10 (the maximum) with minimal prep.
Cross-border work permits
USMCA/CUSMA professional work permits are easier to obtain for Americans than for most nationalities — common transitional path before PR. Intra-company transfers (ICT) are also frequently used by tech employers.
Tax residency
Practical detail: US citizens remain liable for US federal income tax even after becoming Canadian PR (citizenship-based taxation). Speak to a cross-border tax accountant before landing — tax planning meaningfully affects net outcomes.
Immigration from the United States — questions
Can Americans easily move to Canada?+
Among the easiest immigration paths from any nationality. Americans score exceptionally well on CRS (high education, native English), and USMCA/CUSMA work permits provide a clear transitional path. Most American applicants are invited within 1-3 Express Entry draws.
Do I keep my US citizenship if I become a Canadian PR?+
Yes. Canadian permanent residence doesn't require renouncing US citizenship. Dual citizenship is permitted by Canada — and if you eventually naturalize as Canadian, you can hold both passports.
