From South Korea

Canadian immigration from South Korea

South Korea is a steady source country for Canadian PR, particularly in tech, engineering, finance, and entrepreneurship. Korean applicants typically have strong education credentials (SKY university graduates are well-recognised) and benefit from a young, English-prep-savvy demographic. ECA processing is reasonably fast, and Korea's IEC Working Holiday agreement provides a common pre-PR entry path.

What South Korean applicants specifically need

Beyond the standard Canadian immigration documents, these are the country-specific steps that matter coming from South Korea.

ECA via WES or ICAS

Korean universities send transcripts directly to WES. Processing typically 6-10 weeks. SNU, KAIST, POSTECH, Yonsei, Korea University all have established WES workflows.

Document translation and apostille

All Korean-language documents need certified translation. Korea is a Hague Apostille signatory — birth, marriage, and police clearances can be apostilled at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Seoul. Relatively fast.

IEC Working Holiday

Korea has a bilateral IEC agreement with Canada — open work permit for up to 24 months for ages 18-30. Common path: arrive on IEC, find Canadian work, apply for PR via CEC.

Korean PCC

Issued by the National Police Agency. Online application available — relatively fast process (2-4 weeks). For Koreans abroad, request through the Korean consulate.

Immigration from South Korea — questions

Is Canada a popular immigration destination for South Koreans?+

Steadily growing. Common patterns: tech workers from Seoul moving to Vancouver and Toronto, engineering professionals to Alberta and Ontario, and entrepreneurs/startup founders using BC PNP and other provincial entrepreneur streams.

Can Korean students stay in Canada after graduation?+

Yes. Most Korean graduates of Canadian post-secondary programs are eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), valid for up to 3 years. After 1 year of Canadian skilled work on PGWP, they typically apply for PR via CEC.
