Canadian immigration from India
India is the single largest source country for Canadian permanent residence — over 30% of all PRs invited each year are Indian nationals. The most common path is federal Express Entry (FSW for foreign-trained engineers and IT professionals; CEC for those already in Canada on work permits). WES is the dominant ECA body for Indian degrees, and Punjab and Gujarat origin profiles dominate provincial nominations in Ontario, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Indian applicants typically score well on CRS thanks to high education credentials and strong IELTS performance.

Programs that fit Indian applicants
The pathways with the strongest fit for Indian applicants, in order of typical use. Each links to a detailed page covering criteria, documents, and processing times.
Federal Skilled Worker Program
The default path for Indians applying from outside Canada. A bachelor's + 3+ years of TEER 0–3 work + IELTS 7+ commonly produces a 470-500 CRS, inside the invited band most rounds.
Canadian Experience Class
Open after 1+ year of Canadian work on a study or work permit. Increasingly common path for Indian students completing master's programs in Canada.
Alberta Express Entry Stream
Alberta's Accelerated Tech and Dedicated Health Care pathways target two of the largest Indian-applicant cohorts (software / IT and nurses). Faster nomination times than Ontario HCP and lower CRS thresholds.
BC PNP Skilled Worker
BC PNP Skilled Worker — Surrey and Vancouver have Canada's largest South Asian community by per-capita concentration. Strong tech and trades demand; cultural infrastructure (gurdwaras, schools, businesses) is established.
What Indian applicants specifically need
Beyond the standard Canadian immigration documents, these are the country-specific steps that matter coming from India.
ECA via WES
World Education Services is the most-used ECA body for Indian degrees. Processing takes 4-8 weeks once Indian institutions send transcripts directly. Start before submitting your Express Entry profile.
Document authentication
Police clearance certificates (PCC) from PSK and any country you've lived in for 6+ months. Marriage and birth certificates often need to be issued from your home district registrar — older village-level documents may require re-issue.
Language tests
IELTS General Training is by far the most common choice for Indian applicants. CELPIP is also accepted but less familiar; PTE Core (newer) is gaining adoption.
Strong CRS profile pattern
Indian invited candidates typically have: master's degree (+15 CRS over bachelor's), IELTS CLB 9+ (+34 CRS over CLB 7), and 3+ years of skilled work. Aim for CLB 9 listening/reading — disproportionate CRS impact.
Immigration from India — questions
How long does it take to immigrate to Canada from India?+
Add three parts: document preparation (ECA: 4-8 weeks; IELTS booking and test: 4-8 weeks; PCC: 2-6 weeks), your wait in the pool for an invitation (depends on your score), and IRCC's application step (currently about 7 months for Express Entry; it changes monthly). The first two parts vary the most, so no single total fits everyone.
Can I immigrate to Canada from India without IELTS?+
No. Every federal economic program requires an approved language test. IELTS General Training, CELPIP, PTE Core, TEF Canada, or TCF Canada are accepted — there's no waiver for English-medium education.
