Canadian immigration for registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses
Registered nurse (NOC 31301) appears across more Canadian immigration streams than most healthcare occupations. NOC 31301 is TEER 1 and can fit Express Entry, healthcare draws, and many PNPs. You still need provincial nursing licensure before you can work as an RN in Canada.

Federal Skilled Worker Program
Default for foreign-trained RNs. Healthcare category-based draws have issued ITAs at CRS cut-offs in the 422-471 range — well below general rounds.
Atlantic Immigration Program
Atlantic provinces actively recruit RNs through AIP. Smaller cities with strong demand; designated employer + job offer required.
Alberta Express Entry Stream
Alberta's Dedicated Health Care Pathway is built specifically around nursing roles — direct provincial nomination if you have an Alberta health-care job offer + nursing-college eligibility. Structurally targeted at RNs.
BC PNP Health Authority
BC PNP Health Authority stream — direct nomination if you have an offer from a BC health authority in an eligible nursing occupation. Combined with Alberta's DHCP, this is one of the two dedicated single-occupation PNP nurse routes in Canada.
What registered nurses specifically need
Beyond the standard immigration documents, these are the occupation-specific pieces that matter for registered nurses.
Provincial licensure (mandatory before practice)
Each province's nursing college issues the license. The NNAS assessment is the common first step for foreign-trained RNs — start 6-12 months before arrival.
Language
CLB 7 minimum for FSW; CLB 9+ in speaking/listening is often expected by employers in clinical settings. CELPIP and IELTS are both accepted by IRCC and the nursing colleges.
ECA + NNAS
NNAS is the credential review for nursing specifically; some colleges accept it in lieu of a separate ECA, others require both. Check your target province's specific requirements before applying.

Do I need Canadian work experience to immigrate as a nurse?+
No. Foreign nursing work counts the same as Canadian work for Express Entry eligibility. Provincial licensure (separate from immigration) is required before you can practice as an RN in Canada.
