Canadian immigration from Vietnam
Vietnam is one of the fastest-growing source countries for Canadian PR, particularly in IT, healthcare, and skilled trades. Vietnamese applicants benefit from competitive STEM education, but English-language testing is often the largest CRS hurdle — Vietnamese English-medium programs are growing but not yet universal. ECA processing through WES takes longer than from India or China due to slower institutional response times.

Programs that fit Vietnamese applicants
The pathways with the strongest fit for Vietnamese applicants, in order of typical use. Each links to a detailed page covering criteria, documents, and processing times.
Federal Skilled Worker Program
Default for Vietnamese professionals. A bachelor's + CLB 7-8 + skilled work commonly produces a 440-470 CRS — aim for CLB 9 to be more competitive.
Canadian Experience Class
Open after 1+ year of Canadian work — common path for Vietnamese students completing Canadian programs.
Federal Skilled Trades Program
Trades-focused Vietnamese applicants (welding, plumbing, electrical, manufacturing) qualify under FSTP with the lower language bar (CLB 5/4).
Alberta Express Entry Stream
Alberta's Accelerated Tech Pathway is increasingly used by Vietnamese IT professionals; the Opportunity Stream picks up trades and engineering. Calgary and Edmonton both have growing Vietnamese-Canadian communities.
What Vietnamese applicants specifically need
Beyond the standard Canadian immigration documents, these are the country-specific steps that matter coming from Vietnam.
ECA via WES
Vietnamese institutions send transcripts directly to WES. Allow 12-16 weeks — longer than from India or China. Hanoi National University, Vietnam National University HCMC, Hanoi University of Science and Technology have established workflows.
Document translation
All Vietnamese-language documents need certified translation. Vietnam is a Hague Apostille signatory since 2025 — birth, marriage, and police clearances can now be apostilled rather than going through chained consular authentication.
Language as the main CRS hurdle
Most Vietnamese applicants need 6-12 months of structured IELTS prep to reach CLB 9. The CRS difference between CLB 7 and CLB 9 is ~50 points — disproportionate impact on invitation odds. Worth investing in.
Vietnamese PCC
Issued by the local Department of Justice. Required from every country you've lived in for 6+ months. Process is fast in-country (2-4 weeks) but slow if requested through consulates abroad.
Immigration from Vietnam — questions
How long does it take to immigrate to Canada from Vietnam?+
Add three parts: document and language preparation (ECA processing is 12-16 weeks for Vietnamese transcripts, and IELTS preparation takes 6-12 months for most applicants to reach CLB 9), your wait in the pool for an invitation (depends on your score), and IRCC's application step (currently about 7 months for Express Entry).
Do I need a Canadian job offer to immigrate from Vietnam?+
No. Federal Express Entry doesn't require a job offer. IRCC removed direct CRS points for job offers in November 2024, so an LMIA-backed offer no longer adds points to your federal score. It still matters indirectly: an Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) designated-employer offer can unlock that path entirely, and most PNPs treat a provincial job offer favourably (a PNP nomination still adds 600 CRS).
