Canadian immigration for carpenters
NOC 72300 covers carpenters. It is TEER 2 and can fit Federal Skilled Trades, trades draws, and some PNPs. Demand is often strong in construction-heavy areas like the GTA, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and parts of Atlantic Canada.
Programs carpenters often use
Pathways commonly used for this NOC, in order of typical use — whether any applies to you depends on your full profile, not your job title alone. Each links to a detailed page covering the criteria, documents, and processing times.
Federal Skilled Trades Program
Primary path. Red Seal OR 2+ years of carpentry work qualifies. Trades category-based Express Entry draws have favourable CRS cut-offs.
Atlantic Immigration Program
Atlantic provinces have ongoing carpenter shortages, especially NS and NB. AIP designated-employer offer required.
What carpenters specifically need
Beyond the standard immigration documents, these are the occupation-specific pieces that matter for carpenters.
Red Seal carpentry
Interprovincial standard. Required for many ICI roles and strongly preferred for residential. Apprenticeship-to-Red-Seal can take 4 years; foreign-trained carpenters can challenge the exam after credential review.
Provincial certification
Each province has its own apprenticeship board (e.g., Ontario's Skilled Trades Ontario, BC's SkilledTradesBC). Compulsory for some sub-trades, voluntary for general carpentry.
Sub-specialisations
Framing, finishing, formwork, and cabinet-making all sit under NOC 72300. The actual work in your reference letters needs to align with general carpentry duties — not exclusively cabinetmaking, which has a separate NOC.
