Canadian immigration from the Philippines
The Philippines is one of Canada's most consistent source countries — particularly strong in healthcare (registered nurses, care workers, allied health), service occupations, and skilled trades. Filipinos generally have a CRS advantage in language (English-medium education means IELTS scores are routinely high) but a disadvantage in education credential weighting (Philippine bachelor's degrees often map to less than a Canadian bachelor's after ECA). Healthcare category-based Express Entry draws have disproportionately benefited Filipino candidates.

Programs Filipino applicants often use
Pathways commonly used by Filipino applicants, in order of typical use — whether any applies to you depends on your full profile, not your nationality. Each links to a detailed page covering criteria, documents, and processing times.
Federal Skilled Worker Program
Default for foreign-trained Filipino professionals. IRCC's category-based draws target healthcare and STEM occupations with lower CRS cut-offs — you still need an Express Entry profile and the category's work-experience rule.
Atlantic Immigration Program
Atlantic provinces (especially Nova Scotia and New Brunswick) actively recruit Filipino healthcare workers through AIP designated employers.
Canadian Experience Class
Open after 1+ year of Canadian work — many Filipinos enter Canada on caregiver / temporary worker permits and convert to PR through CEC.
Alberta Express Entry Stream
Alberta's Dedicated Health Care Pathway is a dedicated single-occupation route for Filipino RNs — direct provincial nomination with an Alberta health-care job offer and nursing-college eligibility.
Skilled Worker Overseas (SWO) Pathway
Manitoba has Canada's largest per-capita Filipino-Canadian community (Winnipeg in particular). The MPNP Skilled Worker Overseas pathway is a well-worn route for Filipinos with a Manitoba Supporter — typically a close relative who's already established in Winnipeg.
What Filipino applicants specifically need
Beyond the standard Canadian immigration documents, these are the country-specific steps that matter coming from the Philippines.
ECA via WES
WES handles the largest volume of Philippine ECA requests. Philippine bachelor's degrees often assess to a less-than-Canadian-bachelor's equivalent due to lower year counts — bring transcripts directly from CHED-recognised institutions.
NNAS for nurses
The National Nursing Assessment Service is the credential review for foreign-trained RNs. Start NNAS 6-12 months before arrival; provincial licensure is a separate step from PR.
Strong English baseline
Philippine applicants routinely score CLB 9+ on IELTS without intensive prep. High language bands add substantial CRS points even when education credentials assess lower.
PCC (NBI clearance)
NBI Clearance is the Philippine equivalent of a police certificate. Issued by the National Bureau of Investigation — can be requested online and is valid for 6 months.
Immigration from the Philippines — questions
Is being a Filipino caregiver a path to Canadian PR?+
Yes, through the Home Child Care Provider and Home Support Worker pilots — distinct from Express Entry. After 24 months of qualifying care work in Canada, caregivers can apply for PR. This is a high-volume Filipino pathway separate from the federal economic programs.
Are Philippine nursing degrees recognised in Canada?+
Through NNAS credential review and provincial nursing college licensure, yes — but the process takes 12-24 months from arrival. Some provinces (NB, NS, Manitoba) have expedited pathways for Filipino RNs through bridging programs and designated AIP employers.
