Canadian immigration from Mexico
Mexico is a growing source country for Canadian PR, supported by USMCA/CUSMA's professional work-permit framework. Common occupations: engineers, IT professionals, healthcare workers, and skilled trades. Mexican applicants frequently use temporary work permits as a stepping stone to PR via CEC. ECA processing through WES is reasonably fast (8-12 weeks), and Mexico's Hague Apostille membership simplifies document authentication.

Programs that fit Mexican applicants
The pathways with the strongest fit for Mexican applicants, in order of typical use. Each links to a detailed page covering criteria, documents, and processing times.
Federal Skilled Worker Program
Mexican professionals applying from Mexico. A bachelor's + CLB 8 + 3+ years skilled work commonly produces a competitive CRS.
Canadian Experience Class
Strongly leveraged by Mexicans who enter Canada on USMCA work permits — common path for tech, engineering, and management consulting.
Federal Skilled Trades Program
Trades-focused Mexicans (construction, automotive, agriculture) qualify under FSTP, which has a lower language bar (CLB 5/4) than FSW.
Alberta Opportunity Stream
Alberta's Opportunity Stream is a strong fit for Mexican workers already in Alberta on USMCA permits — trades, construction, automotive, and manufacturing. Provincial nomination after one year of Alberta employment.
What Mexican applicants specifically need
Beyond the standard Canadian immigration documents, these are the country-specific steps that matter coming from Mexico.
ECA via WES
Mexican universities send transcripts directly to WES. Processing typically 8-12 weeks. UNAM, ITESM (Tec de Monterrey), and IPN have established WES workflows.
USMCA/CUSMA work permits
Mexican professionals can obtain LMIA-exempt work permits under USMCA's 'TN'-equivalent provisions. Faster than standard work permits and a common pre-PR pathway. Speak to a Canadian immigration lawyer for occupation-specific eligibility.
Document authentication
Mexico is a Hague Apostille signatory — birth certificates, marriage certificates, police certificates can all be apostilled at any Mexican Secretaría de Gobernación office. Straightforward and relatively fast.
Language tests
IELTS or CELPIP. Mexican applicants typically need structured prep to reach CLB 9. French is rarely tested but unlocks the francophone draws if you can clear CLB 7.
Immigration from Mexico — questions
Is USMCA/CUSMA the same as a Canadian PR?+
No. USMCA/CUSMA is a temporary work permit framework — generally valid for 1-3 years and renewable but not permanent. PR is a separate process; many Mexicans use USMCA permits to gain Canadian work experience and then apply for PR via CEC.
Are Mexican engineering degrees recognised in Canada?+
Yes, after WES ECA. Mexican engineering degrees typically assess at Canadian bachelor's equivalent. For practising engineering, provincial licensure through Engineers Canada / APEGA / PEO is the separate professional step.
