What is this program?

The Alberta Opportunity Stream is the AAIP's main worker pathway for foreign nationals already working in Alberta on a temporary work permit. The fundamental gate is straightforward: you must be physically in Alberta, working full-time for an Alberta employer on a valid LMIA or LMIA-exempt work permit, with a permanent full-time job offer in an eligible NOC occupation. Unlike Express Entry, no federal CRS is involved — AAIP nominates you directly, and the nomination feeds into a separate federal application for PR.

Who is it for?

You are currently in Alberta on a valid temporary work permit
You have a permanent, full-time job offer from an Alberta employer (≥30 hr/wk)
Your occupation is on AAIP's eligible-NOC list (not on the ineligible list)
You meet the language, education, and work-experience thresholds for your occupation
You intend to live in Alberta permanently

What does it lead to?

A provincial nomination from Alberta, which you then use in a separate federal application for permanent residence. The federal step after nomination currently takes about 13 months (IRCC's estimate); Alberta's own step comes first. A one-time $500 application fee applies.

Primary requirements

Currently working full-time in Alberta on a valid LMIA-based or LMIA-exempt work permit (PGWP holders must have graduated from an Alberta publicly-funded post-secondary institution).
Permanent, full-time job offer from an Alberta employer in an eligible NOC 2021 occupation (≥30 hours per week).
Minimum language: CLB 5 for most occupations (CLB 4 for some compulsory/optional trades). Test must be ≤2 years old.
Minimum education: high school completion + post-secondary training (Alberta-equivalent or assessed via ECA).
Minimum work experience: typically 24 months of full-time work in your occupation in the past 30 months, of which 12 months must be in Canada.
Not a refugee claimant or under federal appeal/removal.

Valid passport (must remain valid through PR confirmation)
Current Canadian work permit (LMIA-based or eligible LMIA-exempt)
Job offer letter from the Alberta employer (signed, full-time, permanent)
Reference letters from previous employers showing the required work experience
Language test results within the last 2 years (IELTS, CELPIP, PTE Core, TEF, or TCF)
Educational credentials + ECA report for foreign degrees
Pay stubs and T4 confirming Alberta employment
